School no. 101 is the oldest institution for the special education of mentally handicapped children and youths in Poland. It was founded towards the end of the XIX century. The exact date of the building of the school is disputable. In the source material, Micha³ Wawrzynowski gives the year as 1896, whereas according to Fr. Krenzel and J. Schwenk, it was 1897. At the same time, it is worth emphasizing that the Special Primary School no. 101 is the first institution of such a profile in Poland.
Apart from the basic didactic activity, the school also provides extra meals for children from poor backgrounds, makes the necessary school equipment available, organizes different tours and summer trips and provides classrooms with teaching aids.
It also organizes the cultural and sporting lives of its students as well as providing numerous contests with prizes. The children may participate in classes given within the framework of art, music, ecology, computers, music, theatre, the Polish Red Cross and tourist clubs. They do it very willingly anyway, actively participating in studying and fun. The school is vibrant with life.
“Within the space of the many years of its existence, our school has become an inherent part of the Poznañ cityscape, providing versatile help to many generations of handicapped children." Ryszard Koterba, The Head of the School.
